Hear – birth to four months

Sounds connect baby to the world outside their reach, even though baby’s hearing is not very good yet.

All the listening baby does shapes the way the brain becomes wired to understand different sounds.

Yarn lots with baby in a clear, slow, high-pitched style because:

  • baby’s brain can more easily pick up on speech sounds in this ‘baby talk’
  • the higher pitch helps baby tell the words apart from background sounds.

Stop baby getting middle ear infections by:

  • giving baby breastmilk
  • keeping cigarette smoke away
  • keeping baby away from others who are sick.
